I'm a professional book-munching worm. Although I think I dun freaking look like one.
Or do I? Cos I always come out of the salon with nerdy hairstyles.
Anyway, I've ate thru different genres of books since young. When I was in primary sch, I'll scrimp or pester ppl to buy Bookworms for me. Ya its those thin, B3-sized storybooks dat comes out every week, or fortnight, and dat costs $5. Dats like twice the cost of a manga in those days. The short stories depicts the mischievous Sam Seng, the fat Porky, the smart Smarty, the tomboy Simone, and I cant remember the rest. There's a Fatimah or Minah here, Louie there, etc etc. I have abt 50-100 of those, some of which were even plastic-ed nicely by dunno-who (shld be my mum, or my aunt, cant be me).
Every textbook-buying season is a wonderful time for me. Cos I have new books to read. Seriously, I can be so bookworm to read the textbooks. Those Weimings, and dunno wat other names.
But must remember in those days, we do not have as much holiday homework as the kids nowadays.
Then in my upper primaries, I got hooked on Famous Five while others were reading Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys. Got Julian rite, got Dick rite, cannot remember anymore. Oh! I Yahoo-ed the names. Julian, Dick, Anne, George (is a girl) and Timmy the dog. I was a librarian in those days.. no wait. How come I cant remember how the library looks like? Too long.. Too long..
Anyway, during the craze period, I aspired to read the entire collection of Famous Five (I think I din complete all but I did read most). Personally I only have 6 books of so in my cupboards cos its even more expensive than Bookworms. I borrowed the books from library (I dun think there's any other places to borrow) or from my cousin. My English was developed from all these storybooks. My Chinese seriously wasnt that great and I dun really have interest in it.
During my upper primaries oso, I started the ultimate addiction. Mangas. I still remember dropping by Leisure store at Boon Lay MRT everyday after school to check out for new arrivals. Now Leisure store has become a mama shop. Mangas that time was abt $3 or $3.20, those early days when 创艺 was jus an emerging company and mangas do not have book jackets. My 1st 10 vol of 名侦探柯南 was from that time. Its now a freaking 54 vol series and no end in sight yet. After 10 over yrs.
Transitting into my secondaries, I dug thru Roald Dahls (borrowed from I-cant-remember-where again), and Enid Blytons.
With the newly-opened Jurong Point Library as a stopover on my way home, I burrowed the teenage sections for Christopher Pikes, etc. When I was in the craze of playing 金庸群侠传, I practically read thru the whole series of 金庸 novels thru my upper secondaries, from 射雕(full 3 series) to 雪山飞狐. That's partly where my Chinese power came from. (The other part is my mangas)
As I get older, the books I read become thicker. I was eating stuff like Stephen Kings and Agatha Christies in my upper secondaries. My diet included a few movie themed books like Seven, Hackers, as well. Then came John Grishams with all the thick lawyer novels after starting on The Firm (or was it Rainmaker).
I completed the Dan Brown's collection during the hype of the code. N I recently finished Memoirs of a Geisha.
I've got nothing to read now!!
'cept for a few mangas lying ard.
